Goal of the Matchday

Sounders' Victor Rodriguez wins penultimate '18 AT&T Goal of the Week award

It’s not something you see all that often in the annals of the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week award: A delicate close-range chip beating out a bevy of viciously-struck efforts from long distance.

But that’s what unfolded in the Week 34 poll.

Seattle Sounders winger Victor Rodriguez’s nimble, nifty scoop over goalkeeper Adam Grinwis in Seattle's 2-1 road win over Orlando City SC comfortably won top honors this week, outpacing a strong field of golazos in the second-to-last GOTW race of the season.

Rodriguez’s strike, which pushed the Rave Green into the lead just three minutes into their midweek visit to central Florida, garnered 49 percent of the votes cast.

The devastating free kick netted by D.C. United star Wayne Rooney vs. Toronto FC that same night came in second (25 percent), followed by efforts from Vancouver’s Jordan Mutch (12 percent), the LA Galaxy’s Romain Alessandrini (10 percent) and Rooney’s D.C. teammate Lucho Acosta (4 percent).
