Shea suspended three games for kicking ball at referee

Brek Shea

NEW YORK – The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced Thursday that FC Dallas star Brek Shea will face a three-game suspension for kicking a ball at an assistant referee during a match last Saturday.

Shea was also fined an undisclosed amount for the incident, which happened in the 24th minute of FC Dallas’ 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew on Saturday at Crew Stadium.

The FCD attacker was whistled for a foul on Crew midfielder Tony Tchani near the sideline by assistant referee Corey Parker, and promptly juggled the ball for a touch before volleying it in Parker’s direction. The ball hit Parker in the abdomen before Shea raised his hands in frustration over the call. Shea was not issued a yellow card at the time of the incident.

If Shea is called into the upcoming US national team camp, he will serve his suspension during the next three MLS regular-season games for which he is eligible.

FC Dallas return to action at home against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

The Disciplinary Committee also suspended Portland Timbers defender Mamadou Danso one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for striking Houston Dynamo forward Calen Carr across the head during the 82nd minute of the game on May 15. [WATCH] Danso will serve his suspension this Saturday when the Chicago Fire travel to play Portland.

Fines collected will be donated to the charitable partners of MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the MLS Players Union.
