UPDATE: While the Sounders have not yet confirmed the reports, general manager Garth Lagerwey told Sounder at Heart, "I have never had any doubt that Brian would eventually sign."
Schmetzer was out of contract after 2020, when the Sounders reached MLS Cup for the fourth time in five years. He previously brought the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy to his hometown club in 2016 and 2019.
The 58-year-old Seattle native became the Sounders’ head coach midway through the 2016 season, initially on an interim basis, after the departure of Sigi Schmid. His teams have been remarkably consistent, with Schmetzer also leading the club during their USL (2002-08) and pre-MLS days.
While Seattle face some pivotal roster decisions ahead of the 2021 MLS season, Schmetzer’s contract situation has arguably been the biggest wild card. Should Schmetzer re-up, it’d give the organization more stability as they look to build off their 12th straight Audi MLS Cup Playoffs appearance.
