The San Jose Earthquakes have signed two young members of the roster, midfielders Gilbert Fuentes and Eric Calvillo, to new multi-year contracts, the club announced on Thursday.

Fuentes, 17, was the Earthquakes' youngest-ever signing, at 15, when he inked his first pro deal ahead of the 2018 season. The Homegrown player has made one league appearance for San Jose the last two seasons, while he also made 11 appearances on loan at USL Championship affiliate Reno 1868 FC in 2019.

ā€œGilbert is a talented young player that weā€™re excited to re-sign,ā€ said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli in a team release. ā€œGilbert has a clear pathway today. He has grown both physically and in confidence under Matias [Almeyda, San Jose's head coach] and we look forward to his ongoing progress in the coming seasons.ā€

Calvillo, 21, has made five career appearances in regular-season play for the Earthquakes, including two in 2019. The versatile player has also been an impact player for Reno 1868 on loan, where he's split his time.

ā€œEric is a player that we believe in,ā€ said Fioranelli. ā€œWeā€™re excited that he is committed to the club and to the direction we are headed. He plays a role where experience matters, which is why we want to provide him an opportunity where he can continue to assume more responsibility competitively.ā€

San Jose made a big turnaround in 2019 under Matias Almeyda, but fell short of reaching the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs and will aim to reach the postseason in 2020.
