RSL started the first half on an upbeat note, with the team surging forward for the first 25 minutes of the half. The Wizards rallied back, but neither team was able to capitalize with the first half ending 0-0.

At halftime, Ellinger made one substitution, bringing on DF Brian Dunseth for FW Clint Mathis. Dunseth took DF Rusty Pierce's spot in the defense with Pierce moving to the holding midfield spot. This move pushed Jamaican international MF Andy Williams to the forward position alongside Major League Soccer's all-time leading scorer, FW Jason Kreis.

Just 16 minutes in the second half, RSL MF Luke Kreamalmeyer served a ball from the wing into the box for Pierce, who finished off the chance with a header in the 56th minute. The Wizards then went on a run, scoring four goals in 20 minutes. Its first goal came when MF Chris Klein crossed a ball into MF Diego Gutierrez who tapped the ball into the goal in the 70th minute.

Klein picked up his second assist in the game when he connected with MF/FW Jack Jewsbury, adding Kansas City's second goal in the 72nd minute. Klein eventually scored a goal of his own in the 84th minute when Jewsbury layed the ball of Klein who shot from outside adding the Wizards third goal. The final game of the half came with one minute left as Gutierrez served a freekick into the box for MF Davy Arnaud, who headed the ball into goal in the 89th minute with the game ending 4-1. The Kansas City Wizards outshot Real Salt Lake 17-6 while Countess notched six saves.

Real Salt Lake's inaugural game is seven days from tonight at 5:00 p.m. MT in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at Giants Stadium against the MetroStars. Three weeks from today, Real Salt Lake officially brings Major League Soccer to Utah with a home-opening first regular-season encounter versus Colorado at Rice-Eccles Stadium on April 16, live at 1:00 p.m. MT.
