Nick Rimando has been a fixture for Real Salt Lake in his 13 years in Claret-and-Cobalt. So it’s only fitting that the city of Sandy, Utah honored the legendary goalkeeper with his own street outside Rio Tinto Stadium.
On Friday, Sandy City renamed Stadium Way, which loops around the stadium, to Rimando Way in honor of Rimando, who is retiring after 13 seasons.
Along with Sandy City mayor Kurt Bradburn, who read the official proclamation citing many of Rimando’s accomplishments, and RSL owner Dell Loy Hansen, the goalkeeper was presented with a commemorative street sign and the club unveiled the official street signs at the intersections on State Street and 9400 South in Sandy.
In addition, Bradburn and Sandy City Council Chair Chris McCandless proclaimed September 27 was Nick Rimando Day in Sandy City.
Rimando’s final regular season game at Rio Tinto Stadium is Sunday (7:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, on DAZN in Canada) against the Houston Dynamo. RSL are in fifth place in the Western Conference, three points behind fourth-place Seattle, but just three points above the playoff line.
