Reserves: Revolution 4, Wizards 1

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution Reserves defeated the Kansans City Wizards Reserves 4-1 on Sunday, June 6 on the Lower Practice Field at Gillette Stadium. Forward Connally Edozien scored two goals and added an assist to lead New England. Felix Brillant had a goal and an assist in the game.


The Revolution came out passing the ball sharply and created a chance in the 4th minute off of a fast break when midfielder Brilliant released forward Bosan Zoric with a through ball that penetrated the Wizards defense. Zoric took a long-range shot that was saved by Kansas City goalkeeper William Hesmer.


In the 10th minute, Edozien scored for New England. Brillant passed the ball wide to midfielder Cassio, who played an early, diagonal ball from the left flank into the the Kansas City penalty area. Edozien controlled the 30-yard pass with his chest on the right side of the box and drove a shot past Hesmer at the far post to give the Revs the 1-0 lead.


The Revs continued to create chances after going ahead. In the 13th minute, Cassio played Zoric through on a diagonal pass into the center channel, but Zoric's first-time shot was saved by Hesmer.


In the 18th minute, defender Easton Wilson threaded a pass to midfielder Luke Vercollone in the box, but the Revs midfielder's hard shot went into the side netting.


In the 27th minute, the Revs made another quick move up the field, when midfielder Ryan Latham played defender Marcos Romaneiro into the area. Romaneiro then centered the ball for Edozien who tried to slide the ball into the goal but Hesmer made a spectacular save coming across the face of the goal to keep the score 1-0.


Kansas City had a chance in the 35th minute off a Revolution giveaway out of the back. Wizards forward Justin Detter attempted a long-range effort 28 yards from goal that whistled wide of the near, left post.


The Revs doubled their lead in the 37th minute on Brillant's first Reserve Division goal. Romaneiro's defensive pressure produced a giveaway in midfield that fell to Edozien. Edozien then passed quickly to Zoric who played a one-two in the box with Brillant who slotted past Hesmer to make the score 2-0.


The first Revs chance of the second half came in the 49th minute when Vercollone made a dribble run through the center of the Kansas City midfield and took a shot which was deflected to the top of the box, where Zoric's follow-up effort was driven into the middle of the goal and Hesmer was able to save.


The Wizards made a chance in the 51st minute when defender Khari Stephenson played forward Scott Sealy in on the left side of the box. Revs substitute goalkeeper T.J. Tomasso came off his line at the near post and bravely went low to take the brunt of Sealy's hard shot and make the save.


In the 56th minute, off a Wizards corner kick, substitute midfielder Preki made a series of cutback moves with the ball, but was forced to shoot with his less-favored right foot and his effort from the top of the area sailed over the bar.


The Revs made it 3-0 in 57th minute when Vercollone's dribble run down the right center channel created an opportunity for Zoric. Vercollone's pass found Zoric in center forward channel in the box. Zoric's shot deflected off a Kansas City defender, but on the second effort Zoric was able to squeeze a shot past Hesmer - who got a hand to the shot - and into the net to make the score 3-0.


In the 68th minute Kansas City nearly got on the board when Stephenson release a driven shot from the top of the box that crashed off of the right corner of the goal frame.


In the 81st minute, the Revs took a four-goal lead off of a quick buildup play. Substitute midfielder Gary Walker sent the ball wide to Vercollone who centered for Edozien to finish for his second goal of the match.


The Wizards lone goal of the day came in the 90th minute. Third string goalkeeper Martin Hutton, playing as a forward, got possession of the ball outside the left edge of the box. Hutton drew a pair of Revs defenders before slipping a pass to midfielder Ryan Raybould near the top of the area, and Raybould lofted a cross for forward Pat McGinnis at the far, right post. McGinnis rose up and snapped a header inside the post to make the score 4-1.
