Vancouver Whitecaps FC are in talks to sign Botafogo midfielder Caio Alexandre, according to a report from Globo Esporte.
The 22-year-old can play in a box-to-box or defensive midfield role, reaching four goals in 34 games for Botafogo during the Brazilian Serie A season. While Caio Alexandre’s team has struggled this year, he’s regarded as one of the league's breakout players.
Heading into the 2021 MLS season, Vancouver have already turned to South America and signed Colombian winger Deiber Caicedo, a 20-year-old who was last with Deportivo Cali. MLSsoccer.com’s Tom Bogert reported that they’re also looking to sign Sporting CP right back Bruno Gaspar, while their much-desired No. 10 spot remains open as well.
Should Caio Alexandre land in Vancouver, he’d join a team that’s looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They instituted wholesale roster changes a season ago, creating a core for head coach Marc Dos Santos to work with.
