Report: NYCFC chasing Romanian youth international Alex Matan

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

Back to Romania for another attacker?

According to leading Romanian outlet GSP, NYCFC are set to sign attacking midfielder Alex Matan from FC Viitorul for around $1.5 million.

Matan, 21, has been a regular with Romanian youth national teams, including with the U-21s most recently. He has one goal and six assists in 22 appearances with Viitorul this season.

NYCFC currently have Romanian international Alexandru Mitrita on loan at Al-Ahli. He was signed from the Romanian top flight, where Matan currently plays.

NYCFC currently have two open Designated Player spots and a treasure trove of General Allocation Money from trades of Alex Ring (to Austin FC) and Ronald Matarrita (FC Cincinnati). They are expected to add a few pieces to the attack this winter for head coach Ronny Deila.

Matan is also comfortable playing left wing, the position Mitrita largely occupied before departing. His positional flexibility would allow him to both share the field with star No. 10 Maxi Moralez and provide cover for the soon-to-be 34-year-old.
