Report: Nashville SC set to sign Uruguayan youth international Rodrigo Pineiro

UPDATE, Dec. 29: Rodrigo Pineiro's previous club, Uruguayan side Danubio, announced that Pineiro is departing and added that he will be continuing his career in MLS in a Tuesday post to their official Twitter account.

Danubio didn't specify which MLS team Pineiro would be joining in the tweet, but Nashville SC were reported to be close to signing the 21-year-old attacker last week.

Nashville SC are set to sign Uruguayan youth international winger Rodrigo Pineiro from Danubio, according to a report from Martin Charquero.

Pineiro, who can play centrally or out wide, has three goals and three assists in 20 games across all competitions for the Primera Division club. He only joined Danubio this year after being under contract at Penarol, the same side from which LAFC forwards Diego Rossi and Brian Rodriguez arrived in MLS.

Should Pineiro come to Nashville, he’d give head coach Gary Smith another option in the final third alongside forward Jhonder Cadiz and attacking midfielders Randall Leal and Hany Mukhtar. The trio were all on Designated Player deals and helped lift the 2020 expansion club to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Speaking with media members last week, Nashville GM Mike Jacobs teased an international signing that’d be arriving “very soon.” Pineiro would fit that profile, especially after Nashville scored 24 goals this past season, the third fewest in the league.

Pineiro turned pro in 2016 with Uruguayan club Miramar Misiones. He’s also twice represented Uruguay’s U-20 national team.
