The Montreal Impact are on the verge of signing a midfielder from the English Premier League, according to a local report. Montreal-based journalist Sofiane Benzaza tweeted Tuesday about the signing, but didn’t mention a name.

The Impact have the ability to make a splash after Ignacio Piatti left during the club's preseason to rejoin Argentine side San Lorenzo. They also have two Designated Player slots open, with only midfielder Saphir Taider holding that designation.

Montreal are amid their first season under head coach Thierry Henry, and have already booked a spot in the Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals. Before facing Olimpia in the regional competition March 10, they'll play their second MLS regular-season game this Saturday (3 pm ET | TVAS, MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US) at FC Dallas
