Favio Alvarez - LA Galaxy - vs. LAFC

Favio Alvarez was one of the exciting Argentines signed by the LA Galaxy to try and get back to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2019, but a new report suggests his tenure with the club could be short-lived.

Tucuman, Argentina-based journalist Mariano Carabajal told El Deportivo 12 on Monday that the Galaxy will not pick up the purchase option on Alvarez's loan from Atlético Tucuman this offseason, with the player therefore set to return to the Argentine club and possibly shopped to a Mexican club in the coming weeks.

Alvarez, 26, made 18 regular-season appearances in 2019 for the Galaxy after being signed in May, scoring three goals and five assists. The midfielder was asked to play a number of roles in midfield and attack over the course of the season, but an injury late in the season and the subsequent signing of Cristian Pavon seemed to limit Alvarez's impact down the stretch.

Alvarez had not played outside his native Argentina prior to joining the Galaxy. He did ultimately help the Galaxy qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, and came off the bench in their season-ending loss to LAFC.
