Report: LA Galaxy to add Argentine defender Emiliano Insua

Thomas Muller - Emiliano Insua - Bayern Munich - Stuttgart

UPDATE, noon ET, Dec. 30: Respected German publication Kicker effectively confirmed the Insua-to-Galaxy reports early Monday, categorizing the move as a done deal on a free transfer as he enters the final six months of his current contract. No official word from either club yet, however.

DECEMBER 21: With Guillermo Barros Schelotto in charge of the LA Galaxy, there has been a tide of Argentines joining him, and a new report suggests another is on the way.

Argentine outlet TyC Sports reported on Friday the Galaxy will be adding left back Emiliano Insua, on an apparent one-year deal with an option for a second season.

Insua, 30, has extensive experience playing throughout Europe, after coming through the Boca Juniors system when Schelotto himself was a star player there. Insua earned a move to English giant Liverpool in 2007 before making a senior team debut in Argentina for Boca. In addition to playing for Liverpool, the player has featured at a number of notable clubs: Turkish power Galatasaray, Portuguese titan Sporting, and Spanish stalwart Atlético de Madrid, in addition to fellow Spanish side Rayo Vallecano.

Most recently, Insua has featured for German club Stuttgart, joining in 2015, enjoying the longest stretch of his career there, and helping them win the 2.Bundesliga title and earn promotion back to the Bundesliga after they were relegated in 2016. In all, he's played 125 times for the club.

Insua is also a former Argentine international, gaining five caps between 2009-2017.

The Galaxy appear to be in need of a left back, with youngster Diedie Traore making just four appearances in 2019 and a platoon of players otherwise covering the position as needed. The Galaxy open the 2020 MLS regular season Feb. 29 at the Houston Dynamo
