Jurgen Klinsmann is reportedly interested in becoming head coach of the Australia national team at next summer’s World Cup.
Australian outlet The Advertiser reported on Saturday that Klinsmann, who managed the US national team from August 2011 to November 2016, had one of his “closest friends” put in a phone call to a former Australia national teamer to learn more about the Socceroos job. The Advertiser reported that Klinsmann made the inquiry after former Australia manager Ange Postecoglou resigned last week after leading the country past Honduras in the intercontinental playoff and into the World Cup.
The Advertiser reported that salary could be a sticking point for Klinsmann to land the Australia job. They reported that the Australian federation has allocated about $1.5 million per year for the national team manager; Klinsmann earned a reported $3.3 million per year while managing the US.
Australia was drawn into Group C at the World Cup with France, Peru and Denmark.
