Report: Jason Kreis to interview for several vacant roles at Real Salt Lake

Jason Kreis - Orlando City SC - Claps

A second report in as many weeks notes that Jason Kreis will soon interview for the open head coaching and general manager jobs at Real Salt Lake. The first report came in The Athletic back on Oct. 24, while the latest arrived via KSL Sports.

The latter story notes that conversations between Kreis and the club kicked into another gear when he recently was in town to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their 2009 MLS Cup-winning side.

As of now, Kreis is the senior academy director at Inter Miami CF, an expansion side set to enter MLS in 2020 alongside Nashville SC. Aside from those duties, he’s also been managing the US U-23 side as they seek to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Kreis, 46, has plenty of history with RSL, as he managed the club from 2007-13 and made 58 appearances for the Claret-and-Cobalt, as a player from 2005-07. Notably, he coached RSL to their 2009 MLS Cup win and a Concacaf Champions League final in 2011 that Liga MX side Monterrey ended up winning. He scored 108 goals in MLS, which is seventh all-time.

Aside from coaching RSL, Kreis also managed New York City FC in 2015 for their expansion season and Orlando City SC from 2016-18 .

The RSL head coaching position remains open after Mike Petke was dismissed midseason, though interim manager Freddy Juarez led the group to the Western Conference Semifinals of the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. As for the GM position, it’s been vacant since late September, when Craig Waibel and the club parted ways. Since, Elliot Fall has been operating in the role on an interim basis.
