Contract negotiations between the Portland Timbers and star Diego Valeri have hit a "rough patch," according to reports, putting a question mark over Valeri's future.

First reported by ESPN's Taylor Twellman during Sunday's broadcast of the Timbers' 0-0 draw against Minnesota United FC, Valeri and the club have not been able to reach an agreement over a new contract, as Valeri's current deal has only a team option for 2020. The Athletic's Sam Stejskal adds that the Timbers are reluctant to guarantee one of three Designated Player spots to a player who will turn 34 next season.

Valeri, 33, is a club legend, joining the Timbers in 2013. One of the league's most accomplished attackers, Valeri has 76 goals and 81 assists in 210 regular season appearances, one of just six players in league history with at least 75 goals and assists.

He helped lead the team to an MLS Cup triumph in 2015, was named 2017 Landon Donovan MLS MVP and led the team to MLS Cup final last season.

This season, Valeri has eight goals and 16 assists in 30 appearances.
