Report: DC United's Steve Birnbaum to start for US vs. Guatemala

D.C. United center back Steve Birnbaum will get the start for the US national team in Tuesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Guatemala, according to The Washington Post’s Steven Goff.

Goff reported earlier on Tuesday that Birnbaum, 25, will get the start and that Michael Orozco will move to the bench after starting the US’s 2-0 loss at Guatemala on Friday.

The No. 2 overall selection in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, Birnbaum has made 46 appearances in two-plus years with United. He has three career caps with the US national team, and scored the game-winning goal in the USMNT’s 3-2 friendly win against Iceland on Jan. 31.
