D.C. United have signed US Under-23 national team goalkeeper Charlie Horton, according to a report from The Washington Post’s Steven Goff.
Horton, 21, left Leeds United last fall for family reasons. Goff reported that D.C. acquired his MLS rights in a trade with the New England Revolution, with United likely sending “a draft pick or allocation money” to the Revs.
D.C. starting goalkeeper Bill Hamid will be sidelined until at least late May after he underwent knee surgery in January, and United currently have just two healthy goalkeepers on their roster in Andrew Dykstra and Travis Worra.
Born in London but raised in Ohio, Horton signed with Leeds in 2013 but left the English Championship club in November for what he called a “private family matter back home.” The 6-foot-5 ‘keeper said in when leaving Leeds that he planned to “pursue a career in the MLS.”
Horton started for the US Under-23s in a 2-1 defeat at Brazil in November. He played three other matches for the U-23s earlier in 2015.
D.C. will host Mexican club Queretaro in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League series at RFK Stadium on Tuesday night (8 pm ET, FS2). United lost the first leg in Mexico last week, falling 2-0 to Los Gallos Blancos.
