The road to the 2018 World Cup may lead through Major League Soccer for veteran Costa Rican striker Ariel Rodriguez, according to a new report.

Costa Rican outlet MarioSegura.com reported on Tuesday that the 28-year-old attacker is likely to depart his current club in Thailand as he races against time to impress Ticos coach Oscar Ramirez in pursuit of a spot on the final roster for Russia.

MLS and a return to his homeland are stated as his leading options at present, though no specific MLS club is named.

Rodriguez was a prolific scorer for Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa from 2012-2016, leading the Primera Division in goals during the 2015-16 campaign before moving abroad to Bangkok Glass, where he’s averaged better than a goal every other game.

He’s found international opportunities harder to come by, however. He missed out on the 2016 Copa America Centenario due to injury, though he did chip in a goal for Los Ticos in their run to the semifinals of the 2017 Gold Cup.

Rodriguez is reportedly under contract with Bangkok Glass through 2019, though the club is said to be prepared to allow him to move on as he chases his World Cup dream.

Costa Rica have been drawn into a daunting Group E at Russia 2018, alongside Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland.
