After initially being linked with a transfer to New York City FC, now Columbus Crew SC are reportedly set to sign Romanian youth international midfielder Alex Matan.

An update in leading Romanian outlet GSP says that only a medical stands in the way of the FC Viitorul attacking midfielder joining the defending MLS Cup champions, who are part of the league's 2021 Concacaf Champions League contingent.

Matan, 21, has consistently progressed up through Romania’s youth national team structure. In 66 games for FC Viitorul, he has five goals and 12 assists, including experience in Europa League qualifiers.

Should Matan move to Columbus, he’d give Caleb Porter’s team another option in the final third, capable of playing wide or centrally. One of the deepest teams in MLS, they already have the likes of Lucas Zelarayan, Kevin Molino and Pedro Santos in similar positions.
