Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez promised some new center-back signings at last weekās MLS SuperDraft, and he looks to be making good on his word.
One day after a report revealed that the Fire are in the running to sign 24-year-old Polish international center back Marcin Kaminksi, it emerged on Tuesday that the club has apparently come to an agreement with a fellow central defender in Portuguese veteran Joao Meira.
Meira, 28, told Portuguese outlet Record last week that heās signed a two-year deal with the Fire.
He spent the last three seasons with Belenenses, helping the club earn promotion to Portugalās top flight in 2013 before appearing in 45 Primeira Liga games over the last two seasons. He was dropped from Belenensesā roster ahead of the current season.
Prior to joining Belenenses, Meira competed in Portugalās third and fourth divisions until 2010, when he signed with second division side Atletico Clube de Portugal.
