Real Salt Lake have signed 23-year-old Welsh-American defender Adam Henley, the club announced on Tuesday.

Henley was born in Knoxville, Tennessee before moving to England at age two. He came up through the Blackburn Rovers youth system, playing for the club’s first-team from 2011 until last May. He made 80 appearances for Blackburn in the English Premier League and Championship prior to leaving the club following the end of last season. His last first-team minutes came in August 2016 under ex-Houston Dynamo manager Owen Coyle.

“I’m really excited to begin my journey at Real Salt Lake.  It’s a fantastic opportunity at a well-run, well-supported club,” Henley said in a statement released by RSL.  “I feel this is a great chance for me to reignite my career and get back to playing my best football.”

Henley has two caps for the Wales national team, coming off the bench in friendlies in 2015 and 2016.

“He is a promising young talent that has American roots. He has every reason to come over and work hard to be successful,” said RSL GM Craig Waibel. “It’s a perfect scenario for us to bring in a young, energetic player that needs to prove himself.”
