RBNY sign Austrian midfielder Schopp

SECAUCUS, N.J. - Red Bull New York announced today that Austrian midfielder Markus Schopp has been added to the New York Red Bulls Senior Roster as a Discovery player and a Senior International. Terms of the deal are undisclosed.

"We believe Markus is a player who can help the Red Bulls in the short term and the long term," said Red Bull New York Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena. "He brings a wealth of experience to our club and eagerly looks forward to playing for us."

Schopp, a member of the Austrian National Team and the squad's captain during the 1998 World Cup, was last a member of Red Bull Salzburg (Austrian Bundesliga) prior to joining Red Bull New York. During the 2005/2006 Bundesliga campaign, Schopp scored six goals in 31 appearances for the club. The midfielder has played in several of Europe's top leagues, including stints with Sturm Graz (Austrian Bundesliga, 1991-1996, 1998-2001), Hamburger SV (German Bundesliga, 1996-1998) and Brescia (Italian Serie A, 2001-2005).

Schopp will be available for selection for the Red Bulls' match against the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 16 at Giants Stadium. He becomes the third Senior International on the Red Bulls' roster - the other two being Peter Canero (Scotland) and Youri Djorkaeff (France).

The Red Bulls are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 6-9-11 (29 points) record. Their match against Columbus will be televised on MSG.
