Rapids sign 17-year-old Cole Bassett to Homegrown contract

The Colorado Rapids have signed 17-year-old midfielder Cole Bassett to a Homegrown contract, the youngest signing in club history.

Bassett, currently a junior in high school, joined the Rapids academy in 2017 and has quickly ascended from their U-17 side to the U-23 squad, impressing the Rapids' brass at every stop. 

“This is a special day for the club,” said Colorado Rapids’ executive vice president and general manager Pádraig Smith in a team statement. “Cole is very talented and a very humble young man. It’s a big credit to both his parents, as well as our Development Academy staff, that we’re able to bring such a well-rounded person and player in to our first team.”

The Rapids teased the announcement appropriately, tweeting a link to the song "Homegrown" by Zac Brown Band 15 minutes prior to announcing Bassett's signing.

Bassett will share a locker room with 39-year-old Tim Howard, who is 22 years his senior.
