TRANSFER TRACKER: Signing
The Colorado Rapids have signed 17-year-old midfielder Cole Bassett to a Homegrown contract, the youngest signing in club history.
Bassett, currently a junior in high school, joined the Rapids academy in 2017 and has quickly ascended from their U-17 side to the U-23 squad, impressing the Rapids' brass at every stop.
âThis is a special day for the club,â said Colorado Rapidsâ executive vice president and general manager PĂĄdraig Smith in a team statement. âCole is very talented and a very humble young man. Itâs a big credit to both his parents, as well as our Development Academy staff, that weâre able to bring such a well-rounded person and player in to our first team.â
The Rapids teased the announcement appropriately, tweeting a link to the song "Homegrown" by Zac Brown Band 15 minutes prior to announcing Bassett's signing.
Bassett will share a locker room with 39-year-old Tim Howard, who is 22 years his senior.
