Chris Wondolowski - San Jose Earthquakes - action

There was an unfamiliar sight in the San Jose Earthquakes' game on Saturday.

Forward and captain Chris Wondolowski did not start the match. The Quakes' talisman, currently the second-highest scorer in MLS history behind only Landon Donovan, went nearly three years to the day since the last time he did not start a league match in which he was available for selection.

Wondolowski has not played consecutive league games in that span -- he has missed time over the years for US national team duty. But since joining the Earthquakes in 2009, he has only entered the game as a substitute 11 times (six of those sub appearances came in his first season with the team), starting the remaining 248 MLS regular season matches for the club.

On Saturday, Wondo entered the game against the Houston Dynamo in the 67th minute, as the Quakes battled back from a 2-1 deficit to a 2-2 draw courtesy of another substitute, Jahmir Hyka, scoring a late goal for the hosts at Avaya Stadium.
