Earthquakes mascot "Q" joined San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales on Tuesday, May 31 as he visited five local San Jose schools on the annual Mayor's Caravan for the second year in a row. "Q" toured around the city with city council members Forrest Williams, Nancy Pyle, and Nora Campos, members of the San Jose Police and Fire departments, and Mary Simon of the Resource Area for Teachers to present the "Mayor's Progress to Excellence" award. The Earthquakes mascot and others were chaperoned by police on motorcycles to Christopher Elementary School, Arbuckle Elementary School, McCollam Elementary School, Mathson Middle School, and Chavez Elementary School, the 2005 recipients of the award which recognizes the San Jose schools who have made the most academic improvement over the last two years. As Mayor Gonzales congratulated the students, "Q" rallied up the audience from the stage to help support the growing academic achievement of local San Jose students.

A week later, "Q" was back in action, this time at Country Lane Elementary School on Tuesday, June 7 to partake in the San Jose school's Literacy Day. "Q" visited Ms. Simon and Mrs. Rosnick's classes to share Jonathan London's book "Froggy Plays Soccer." While a member of the Earthquakes staff read the book, "Q" acted out the story of Froggy playing and scoring the goal in the city cup championship. "Q" finished out the reading sessions by explaining the importance of reading and also answered questions from the students.
