Major League Soccer's struggles in Mexico during the CONCACAF Champions League are well known, but for those wondering, here's the sentence MLS fans hate to hear: No MLS team has ever won in Mexico during the CONCACAF Champions League or its predecessor, the CONCACAF Champions' Cup.
The Columbus Crew lost to Santos Laguna on Tuesday, but the defending MLS Cup champions Real Salt Lake take on last year's CCL runners-up, Cruz Azul, on Wednesday. Can RSL make history this time, or will the big win come later during this CCL campaign, when Toronto FC take on Cruz Azul (Sept. 21) or the Seattle Sounders travel to Monterrey (Sept. 22)? Or will the Crew advance to the next round, where they can earn the historic win against another Mexican team?
