Philadelphia Union's Andre Blake named MLS Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year

The No. 1 pick in the 2014 SuperDraft is now the No. 1 goalkeeper in all of MLS.

Philadelphia Union and Jamaica international Andre Blake was named 2016 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year on Thursday, beating out the New York Red Bulls’ Luis Robles and Colorado Rapids’ Tim Howard to take the award.

After playing sparingly during his first two seasons, Blake became the Union’s undisputed starter in 2016, starting 32 regular season matches to help Philadelphia qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

The athletic, 6-foot-4 backstop finished the regular season with six shutouts and a total of 99 saves. The 2016 MLS All-Star earned Philadelphia several points with some highlight reel stops, and ended the year with a 1.56 goals against average and a 66 percent save percentage.

Blake also cemented his status as Jamaica’s top goalkeeper in 2016, recently securing a bid for the Reggae Boyz at the 2017 Gold Cup and featuring for the country in 2018 World Cup qualifying. He started all three of Jamaica’s matches at the Copa America Centenario earlier this year and has 22 career senior caps.

Blake, who will turn 26 on Sunday, won the Goalkeeper of the Year vote by a wide margin over runner-up Robles, finishing first in the player, media and club vote to claim the award. Howard finished third in the voting, while D.C.’s Bill Hamid and San Jose’s David Bingham rounded out the top five.
