Philadelphia Union 2, Colorado Rapids 1 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

After three straight wins and three straight shutouts, the Philadelphia Union made club history on Saturday evening, grabbing their first ever four-game winning streak by besting the Colorado Rapids 2-1 at Talen Energy Stadium.

The Rapids promptly ended the Union's shutout streak early in the proceedings thanks to Caleb Calvert's first career MLS goal in the 15th minute.

However after a solid first half, the game quickly soured for the visiting Rapids. A penalty conceded, a controversial red card for Calvert and a free kick goal allowed doomed Pablo Mastroeni's cellar-dwelling squad to another frustrating result.

Three Things

  1. FOUR FOR FOUR: Saturday's match marked a bright note in Union club history: their first ever four-game winning streak. After a difficult and almost bleak start to the 2017 campaign, the Union are as hot as any team in the league right now. The defense looked stout once again too, allowing just one shot on target for the visiting Rapids. The question now becomes, just how far can this Union team take this?
  2. CALVERT'S NOTABLE EVENING: Calvert won't soon forget Saturday's tilt against the Union. The 20-year old from California not only bagged his first career MLS goal, he also received his first career MLS red card when he was sent off for a second yellow upon entering the field without permission from the referee.
  3. SAPONG IS ROLLING: The MLS calender has not hit June yet and CJ Sapong already has more goals this season than he did in 2016. Sapong's perfectly placed penalty marked his 8th tally of the 2017 season for the Union. He's been one of the league's most dangerous players all year and is a key factor in Philadelphia's recent historic form.
