PURCHASE, N.Y. – The MLS summer transfer window closes on Wednesday, and it appears that the top team in the Eastern Conference is not likely to make any more moves.
New York City FC coach Patrick Vieira already brought in Luxembourg international defender Maxime Chanot, who made his debut off the bench in Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Colorado Rapids.
But there isn’t a big desire to made any more additions.
“Anything can happen, but something that is sure is we’re not going to take a player just because we need a number,” Vieira said. “We want to take players we believe can help us achieve our target and can bring something to the team. If we don’t find this player, we’re not going to bring anybody.”
“We’ll see what’s going to happen,” he added. “But in our mind nothing yet.”
A big reason why Vieira isn’t stressing movement during the window is the play of several reserves in the win over the Rapids, including left back Diego Martinez, who earned his second start, and forwards Tony Taylor and Steven Mendoza, who each scored their second goal of the season.
“I think when you look at the way Diego played, the way Tony and Mendoza played, they still have a big part to play for the rest of the season,” Vieira said. “I’m really happy with them.”
There have also been rumors about out-of-favor Mix Diskerud being moved out. The 25-year-old midfielder hasn’t played since a 3-2 loss to Real Salt Lake on June 2, and hasn’t been part of the 18-man game day roster in seven of the last eight games. But he still remains a part of the club, Vieira said.
“He will have to challenge himself, challenge other players around his position, and he will have to fight and work really hard. Mix is an international player and he’s a really ambitious player,” he said. “He wants to be part of the national team for the World Cup, and there is a different way for him to get there. He has to evaluate the situation and make a decision for himself.”
