Jordan Morris - Seattle Sounders - solo - September 2020

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Loan

The Seattle Sounders have loaned winger Jordan Morris to English Championship side Swansea City for the remainder of the 2020-21 season, the club announced Thursday. The Athletic were the first to report the move on Jan. 17.

The 26-year-old is Swansea’s third signing of the winter window, following Ben Hamer's move from Huddersfield and Conor Hourihane's arrival from Aston Villa. The Swans are currently second in the Championship table.

Morris has been a wildly-successful homegrown signing since joining the Sounders in January 2016. He has 35 goals and 20 assists in 105 MLS games, winning two MLS Cups with Seattle and placing on the league’s 2020 Best XI

"At the end of the day, this move is all about Jordan and what he wants from his career," Sounders general manager & president of soccer Garth Lagerwey said in a release. "Our club and city are behind him as he embarks on the next phase of his journey, and should he return to Seattle at the end of this loan, we know he will be stronger for the experience.”

Morris, who has 10 goals in 39 US men’s national team appearances, was given permission by Gregg Berhalter to leave the USMNT camp in Florida this past Wednesday. In a video conference call with reporters during USMNT camp earlier this month, Morris admitted European interest.

"I'm very proud of the player and professional that Jordan has become. He’s been a large part of this club’s success and has more than earned this opportunity to ply his trade abroad,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said in a release. “This particular move gives him a chance to showcase his skillset and opens a number of options for his future. On top of that, I am excited to watch him play for Swansea.”

Morris had a chance to play overseas after playing NCAA Division I soccer at Stanford, but spurned a move to Werder Bremen to play for his hometown team.
