Franco Escobar - Atlanta United - October 19, 2019

Atlanta United have sent defender Franco Escobar to Argentine club Newell's Old Boys on loan, the club announced Tuesday.

Escobar, who turns 26 this month, was acquired ahead of the 2018 season. He has made 63 regular season appearances with the club and scored in Atlanta's 2018 MLS Cup win over the Portland Timbers. In addition to MLS Cup, Escobar also won the Campeones Cup and the US Open Cup during his time with the team.

“We want to thank Franco for all of his contributions to the club so far and wish him continued success during his loan spell,” VP & Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club statement.

The Athletic's Felipe Cardenas reports the deal includes a purchase option for Newell's.

Prior to joining Atlanta, Escobar came through the Newell's academy. He made 34 appearances with the club prior to moving to Atlanta. The club qualified for the 2021 Copa Sudamericana, a continental South American club tournament.
