Next Major League Soccer Commissioner
Larry Berg brings to Major League Soccer a career that has combined a lifelong connection to soccer with leadership in professional sports ownership, investment management, corporate governance, and philanthropy.
A lifelong soccer fan who played for many years, Berg has helped shape the sport through ownership and leadership roles in Major League Soccer and internationally. Before becoming Commissioner, he served as Founding Co-Managing Owner of Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), helping build the club into one of MLS' premier organizations and guiding its growth on and off the field. Berg also held ownership interests in Italian Serie A club AS Roma and Swansea City AFC in Wales, providing him with valuable experience across the global football landscape.
Beyond his club ownership responsibilities, Berg played an active leadership role across Major League Soccer, serving as Co-Chair of the league's Sporting and Competition Committee and contributing to numerous Board of Governors committees. Those responsibilities gave him broad experience with league governance, competition, roster strategy, player investment, and the continued evolution of MLS.
In addition to his work in soccer, Berg spent more than three decades as one of the private equity industry's leading executives. He served as a Senior Partner at Apollo Global Management for 30 years before continuing his investment career as Senior Partner at 26North. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with management teams, boards, and ownership groups to guide organizations through growth, transformation, and long-term value creation.
Berg has also served as Chairman of McGraw Hill, 2U, and Crisis Text Line and has held board leadership positions across education, consumer services, and other industries. His governance experience reflects a longstanding commitment to innovation, education, and mission-driven organizations.
Berg earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Allison, co-founded the A&L Berg Foundation, which supports initiatives in education, the arts, and community impact.
