A rivalry is renewed Sunday evening when the New York Red Bulls host the Philadelphia Union in a Sunday showdown with massive playoff implications.
The Red Bulls (13-13-5) snapped a three-match losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers Wednesday night at Providence Park. Kyle Duncan scored his first MLS goal in the 3rd minute and helped set up an insurance goal in second-half stoppage time when Danny Royer scored from the penalty spot after Marc Rzatkowski was fouled in the box.
The Union (15-8-7) earned a second straight statement result at Talen Energy Stadium, earning a 1-1 draw against LAFC Saturday night. Kacper Przybylko set the tone with a 3rd-minute tally, his 14th of the season. But Golden Boot presented by Audi leader Carlos Vela leveled two minutes from halftime as the teams shared the points.
In the first meeting between the foes at Talen Energy Stadium on June 8, a virtuoso performance by Ilsinho off the bench, in which he scored twice and contributed an assist, helped the Union erase a two-goal halftime deficit and defeat the Red Bulls, 3-2.
