New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Rafael Diaz makes fingertip save in USL

The New York Red Bulls signed goalkeeper Rafael Diaz to an MLS contract on Tuesday. Diaz joins the club’s first team after spending two years in USL with New York Red Bulls II.

A native of Rockaway, New Jersey, the 25-year-old Diaz played 11 games in two seasons with Red Bulls II. He allowed just two goals in five appearances in 2016.

“Rafi has done well to learn and improve over the last two seasons,” Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch said in a club-issued statement. “He has proven to be a good professional and we look forward to him continuing his development with the club this season.”

The New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year and NSCAA New Jersey Player of the Year in 2009, Diaz spent five years at St. John’s University and played the 2014 season in USL with Orlando City before joining Red Bulls II for their inaugural campaign in 2015.
