The New York Red Bulls have acquired wingback Tom Edwards on loan from English Championship side Stoke City through the end of 2021, the club announced Wednesday.

Edwards, 22, will occupy an international spot and will be added to RBNY’s roster upon receipt of his P-1 Visa and international transfer certificate.

“We have been following Tom’s progress for some time, so we’re delighted to have the opportunity to bring him to New York,” head of sport Kevin Thelwell said in a release. “Tom is a very good young player that reinforces our back line and brings a different set of experiences to our locker room. We look forward to getting him here and getting him acclimated to our club.”

Edwards developed in the Stoke City youth system before making his professional debut in October 2017 against Manchester City. The England native has made 51 appearances across all competitions for Stoke City, supplying one goal and one assist.

Edwards was recently loaned to English League One side Fleetwood Town, making 12 appearances across all competitions. He’s featured in three games for England’s U-20 national team.

“I’m pleased that we have added Tom to our team,” head coach Gerhard Struber said in a release. “Tom has a variety of experiences at different levels of English football, including the Premier League. He is a dynamic player at both ends of the field, he is a strong defender and has good qualities to join in the attack as well.”

Edwards joins a RBNY team that also has Kyle Duncan and Mandela Egbo at right back, as well as Jason Pendant and youngster John Tolkin at left back. They’re entering their first full season with Struber as head coach, having made the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs last year for the 11th straight season.
