TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
The New York Red Bulls have signed Ghanaian national team forward Samuel Tetteh on loan from Red Bull Salzburg pending receipt of his P-1 visa and ITC, the club announced Tuesday. The 24-year-old will occupy an international slot on New York's roster through the end of the 2020 season with a club option to exercise a permanent transfer.
"Samuel is an exciting attacking player that our scouts have been following," Head of Sport Kevin Thelwell said in a statement. "He is strong physically and technically, and plays with a lot of confidence. He's got an intelligence in each phase of the game and we believe he'll fit in well with our group.”
Tetteh, who has more than 100 first-team appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga, signed with Salzburg out of the West African Football Academy in July, 2016. He's had loan stints with Salzburg affiliate FC Liefering in Austria's second division, where he had 10 goals and five assists in 20 appearances. A second loan to Austrian Bundesliga side LASK followed in Jan. 2018. Tetteh had 19 goals and 15 assists in 86 appearances across all competitions and appeared in all four of LASK's 2019-20 UEFA Champions League qualifying matches, recording two assists.
He's coming off his most successful domestic campaign, having scored seven goals and added three assists as Lask finished fifth in the 2019-20 final table.
"Samuel is a very interesting attacking player," Red Bulls coach Chris Armas said. "He's intelligent, he can create on his own and can stretch backlines with his speed. We know that Samuel has big potential and we are excited to get to work with him."
Tetteh started every match for Ghana during the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup and has made eight appearances for the Black Stars, scoring once in an Africa Cup of Nations qualification match. His last appearance was in 2017, a 65-minute shift against Burkina Faso in a third-place playoff in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Tetteh's addition comes a week after the Red Bulls signed former England youth international Dru Yearwood from Brentwood.
