New York City FC sign goalkeeper Cody Mizell

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

New York City FC have signed goalkeeper Cody Mizell, the club announced on Thursday.

The 28-year-old backstop joins NYCFC from New Mexico United of the USL Championship, where he'd been the starter in goal since the club's expansion season in 2019. Mizell established himself as one of the USL's top goalkeepers since that time, and is currently New Mexico United's all-time leader in appearances and minutes played.

Mizell began his mandatory quarantine period earlier this week and is expected to be in Florida for the start of NYCFC's training camp that starts Monday in Orlando.

"We’re delighted to welcome Cody to NYCFC to round out our goalkeeping group ahead of the 2021 season," NYCFC sporting director David Lee said in Thursday's release. "We had the opportunity to evaluate him during the Florida Cup last season and know he’ll be a great addition to our squad. He’s been an excellent performer in the USL Championship for a number of years and is deserving of this opportunity to play in Major League Soccer.”

After a standout college career at Clemson, Mizell has featured for the Atlanta Silverbacks of the NASL in addition to his stops with New Mexico, the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Charlotte Independence. He also did a stint in Iceland with Knattspyrnufélagið Fram, making 20 appearances. He was signed by the Colorado Rapids in 2017 but failed to make a first-team appearance before being loaned to Charlotte.

Mizell joins starter Sean Johnson and Luis Barraza as the other goalkeepers on NYCFC's first-team roster
