The New England Revolution and New York Red Bulls renew a longstanding rivalry when the teams square off for the 75th time in the regular season Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

The Revs are coming off a midweek win on the road against D.C. United to extend an unbeaten streak to six league games, while the Red Bulls failed to capitalize on a derby win over NYCFC and fell at Philadelphia.

The Revs have long dominated this series in Foxborough, winning 24 of the 36 all-time meetings at Gillette. That includes a 1-0 victory last April with Cristian Penilla coming off the bench to score the 73rd-minute winner.

New England Revolution

When goals are hard to come by during the run of play, set pieces loom even larger and the Revs cashed in on two of those situations to defeat D.C. United, 2-1. Gustavo Bou bagged the first after intercepting a failed clearance following a corner kick and Teal Bunbury latched onto an an Alexander Buttner corner kick to double the advantage.

“In training we’ve been working on our set pieces, working on our delivery, making some good runs in the box – good, aggressive runs, working on some picks,” said assistant coach Richie Williams, filling in for the suspended Bruce Arena. “Service is very important. Good runs and everybody being on the same page, that’s what you saw tonight. We’ve got to continue to do that. It’s a big part of the game.”

New York Red Bulls

The Red Bulls were the aggressors in a derby win over NYCFC, earning a deserved 1-0 victory in their restart to the 2020 regular season. That wasn't the case in a loss by the same scoreline against the Philadelphia Union, which was "unacceptable" according to coach Chris Armas.

“For us, it was a big game and we feel disappointed right now. It wasn’t good enough on the night because we talk about good enough being a game. Not half a game,” Armas told media postgame. “It’s unacceptable in the first half for us to show up without the energy and the fight that we normally have and the commitment. Plain and simple. A game of two halves. First half far off. Second half like us and that’s got to be the standard.”
