Inter Miami, New England Revolution League One Announcement

The New England Revolution and Inter Miami will launch clubs to play in USL League One beginning in 2020, the league announced Wednesday. Miami's MLS side will also kick off in 2020.

Both of Miami's clubs will share the stadium and training facility in Fort Lauderdale next season. The Revs' team will also play at Gillette Stadium.

“We’re thrilled to have Inter Miami CF and the New England Revolution join League One,” USL Senior Vice President Steven Short said in a league statement. “It’s exciting to watch our league as it continues to grow in both size and intensity. We’re already looking forward to our second year of competition and know that both of these clubs will be tremendous additions to our league.”

New England and Miami are looking at their USL side to be the bridge between the academy and first team.

“Player development continues to be a top priority as we build for the future success of the club,” Revs President Brian Bilello said. “Given the growth of our academy in recent years, at the end of last season we began discussions with the USL about adding a second professional team. We’re pleased those discussions have resulted in the launch of Revolution II for the 2020 season.”

FC Dallas, Orlando City SC and Toronto FC are other MLS clubs who field teams in League One, which is wrapping up its first season.

“We are proud to close this deal and join a competitive league where our youth players can compete against quality opponents,” Miami sporting director Paul McDonough added. "USL League One will provide more opportunities for players from South Florida as well as elite international prospects.”
