Munich holds Bremen, keeps Bundesliga lead

MUNICH - Bayern Munich remained three points clear at the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday after a hard-fought draw against second-placed Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena.

The visitors took an early lead through playmaker Diego but his fellow Brazilian Ze Roberto levelled matters just after the half-hour mark.

Bremen suffered a surprise defeat at home to Bochum last weekend but arrived in Munich with a positive approach which was rewarded after six minutes.

Markus Rosenberg picked up the ball on the left wing, dribbled around Lucio before playing in Diego, who beat full-back Willy Sagnol and then keeper Oliver Kahn at his near post.

Bayern stormed back and only a fine save from Bremen keeper Tim Wiese kept out Mark van Bommel's long-range drive.

The hosts ought to have drawn level five minutes later when they were awarded a penalty when Wiese felled Luca Toni inside the area.

The Italy striker took the spot-kick himself but Wiese redeemed himself with a fine save to his right.

Bremen's lead did not last much longer though as, after 32 minutes, Ze Roberto latched on to Toni's through ball and slotted his shot through Wiese's legs.

The second half saw Bremen retreat into their own half, allowing Bayern to dominate possession although Ottmar Hitzfeld's men failed to create too many chances.

The opportunities finally arrived in the final 20 minutes.

Wiese saved well from Martin Demichelis' header while Toni had an effort disallowed after a questionable offside decision.

Former Fiorentina striker Toni had another chance to win it but fired over from 16 yards with eight minutes to go.
