Montreal Impact sign Uruguayan attacking midfielder Alejandro Silva via TAM

The Montreal Impact announced the acquisition of attacking midfielder Alejandro Silva on Monday, completing a permanent transfer from Argentine club CA Lanus via the use of Targeted Allocation Money.

The Uruguayan international has signed a three-year contract with the Impact and will join the club upon receiving his international transfer certificate and passing his medical.

“Alejandro is an attacking player who will bring his experience to the team and increase our options in the last third,” said Montreal head coach Remi Garde in a club release. “His passing qualities and his speed will contribute in improving our play. His high work rate also makes him an option as a midfielder.”

Silva, 28, boasts a rich resume marked by four runs in the Copa Libertadores, helping Lanus reach the final of the South American continental competition last year and doing the same with Paraguayan club Olimpia in 2013.

He recorded five goals and 11 assists in 37 career games and 2,309 minutes in the competition, chipping in four assists in last year’s tournament. He’s also taken part in Copa Sudamericana games, and won the 2016 Superliga, 2016 Copa Bicentenario and the 2016-17 Supercopa Argentina with Lanus.

“Alejandro is a right-sided attacking player with a lot of experience playing in South America,” said Impact technical director Adam Braz. “He will add a different dimension to the attack and will help improve the overall quality and depth of the team. His versatility on the field is very positive in that he can also play as a central midfielder. We are in discussions with other clubs regarding specific players that Rémi has identified and we are hopeful that we can conclude certain moves in the not-so-distant future.”

A native of Montevideo, Silva started his career with hometown club Centro Atletico Fenix, playing three seasons in the Uruguayan first division before moving on to Paraguay’s Olimpia in 2012. He also played a season on loan with Uruguayan club Peñarol in 2014-15, and returned on loan with Olimpia for the 2015-16 season.

Silva has earned four caps with Uruguay’s national team, most recently appearing in friendlies against Ireland and Italy last summer. He is the latest in a line of players to arrive in MLS from Lanus, including Miguel Almiron of Atlanta United, the Portland Timbers' reigning MLS MVP Diego Valeri and LAFC's Rodrigo Pacheco.
