Moments of Matchday 28: Familiar Faces Make Impact in New Places

Below is a selection of the notable performances and moments from the 14 matches played on the 28th matchday of the 2025 MLS regular season on Saturday, August 9, and Sunday, August 10.

Highlights of the matchday included:

  • Multiple big-name summer acquisitions made their debut over the weekend including LAFC’s Son Heung-min, Toronto FC’s Djordje Mihailovic, and the New England Revolution’s Matt Turner. Each player made their impact known with Son winning a penalty kick in his substitute appearance, Mihailovic producing a game-tying assist, and Turner earning a shutout.
  • Matchday 28 saw the chase for the Supporters’ Shield tighten even more as eight clubs are separated by just seven points after the weekend. The Philadelphia Union currently sit atop at 51 points (15-5-6), but San Diego FC (49 points, 15-7-4) and Orlando City SC (44 points, 12-6-8) both gained ground with wins.
  • Anders Dreyer added to his incredible debut season with a goal and an assist in San Diego FC’s 2-0 victory, increasing his goal contribution tally to 29 in 2025 and passing Carlos Vela (27 in 2018) for the most by a player in an expansion club’s debut season.
  • ​​​​​​​Orlando City’s Martín Ojeda recorded a goal and an assist in the club’s 4-1 victory over Inter Maimi CF and extended his goal contribution streak to 11 consecutive matches, tied for the third-longest streak in MLS history. Orlando City remained unbeaten at home against its in-state rival, owning a 4-0-4 record in eight all-time regular-season matches against the Herons at Inter&Co Stadium. ​​​​​​​
  • Seattle Sounders FC earned a 4-0 road victory over the LA Galaxy on Sunday night in a match that featured a brace from forward Danny Musovski. Musovski entered the 2025 season having scored 17 goals across 104 regular season matches in his MLS career, and has now scored a career-best 10 goals in 22 games this year, including multiple goals in two of his last three matches.

Carles Gil Makes Club History on Revolution’s Alumni Night

On a night where the New England Revolution celebrated legends from its history on Alumni Night, it was one on the field – Carles Gil – who was making headlines. The 2021 Landon Donovan MLS MVP shined, assisting Leonardo Campana in the 62nd minute (Watch Here) before finishing off the Revs’ 2-0 win with perfect footwork and a sublime strike in the 70th minute (Watch Here).

The sensational performance from Gil saw him make club history as he reached 130 career goal contributions, eclipsing Taylor Twellman (129) for the most in a Revolution kit. Gil is now up to nine goals and nine assists on the season as the Revs earned a crucial three points in their chase an Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs spot.

New England will look to continue their postseason push next Saturday when they host LAFC at Gillette Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).

San Diego FC Mounting Supporters’ Shield Charge as Road Warriors

With the Philadelphia Union and Nashville SC both dropping points in the Supporters’ Shield chase on Matchday 28, San Diego FC was the club that capitalized, defeating Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park, 2-0. Sitting at 49 points (15-7-4), the first-year MLS side resides just two points behind the Philadelphia Union (51 points, 15-5-6) as it looks to become the first expansion side in history to win the Supporters’ Shield. Saturday’s victory marked the fifth-straight road win for San Diego, another record for an expansion club in their debut season.

Leading the charge for the visitors was Landon Donovan MLS MVP candidate Anders Dreyer, who assisted Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano’s opening goal before adding his own in the second half. Dreyer is now up to 29 goal contributions (12 goals, 17 assists) in 2025, eclipsing Carlos Vela (27 in 2018) for the most by a player in an expansion club’s debut season.

Next up for San Diego is a trip up the coast of California to face the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park on Sunday, August 17 (7 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV / Apple TV+).

Ojeda, Orlando Cruise Past Miami in Rivalry Clash

After earning a 3-0 victory over its in-state rival Inter Miami CF on May 18, Orlando City SC secured the season sweep of the Herons with a 4-1 victory on Sunday, behind another standout performance from Landon Donovan MLS MVP candidate Martín Ojeda. The Lions (44 points, 12-6-8) have won three consecutive matches and climbed into a top-four position in the Eastern Conference race with the victory.

With a goal and an assist on Sunday, Ojeda has recorded at least one goal contribution in 11 consecutive matches, tying for the third-longest goal-contribution streak in MLS history. Only Sebastian Giovinco (12 consecutive games in 2018) and Josef Martínez (15 consecutive games in 2019) have recorded longest goal-contribution streaks in MLS history. The 26-year-old Argentine has 27 goal contributions (14 goals, 13 assists) this season, tied with Miami’s Lionel Messi (27) for the second-most in the league this season, behind only San Diego FC’s Anders Dreyer (29).

The Lions’ Designated Player trio of Ojeda, Luis Muriel (two goals, one assist), and Marco Pašalić (one goal) each found the net for Orlando City on Sunday and have combined for 33 goals and 24 assists this season.

Orlando returns to action against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV), as the club looks to continue its ascent up the Eastern Conference table.

Zaha’s Winner Extends Charlotte’s Winning Streak to Five

Behind an 85th-minute goal from forward Wilfried Zaha, Charlotte FC secured its fifth consecutive win in MLS play with a 1-0 victory over FC Cincinnati on Sunday. Charlotte (41 points, 13-11-2) moved into seventh position in the tightly-packed Eastern Conference standings and sit just one win shy of matching the club’s single-season record of 14 wins, set last year.

The win was Charlotte’s fifth straight in MLS regular season play, establishing a new club record and extending the longest active win streak in the league through Matchday 28. Zaha’s goal marked his ninth consecutive game with a goal contribution, a span in which the Ivory Coast international has accumulated three goals and seven assists.

Charlotte will look to extend its streak to six consecutive wins as the club welcomes Real Salt Lake to Bank of America Stadium on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).

Eduard Löwen Leads St. Louis Back to Winning Ways

One of the players who has most endeared himself to the St. Louis CITY SC fans within the club’s first three seasons is midfielder Eduard Löwen. The first player ever to wear the No. 10 for St. Louis, Löwen has lived up to the creativity that comes with the jersey number. In Saturday’s 3-1 win over Nashville SC, Löwen produced the assist on João Klauss’ opening goal, marking his 20th career assist and becoming the first player in club history to accomplish this feat.

Thanks to Löwen’s performance, St. Louis earned its second win in the last four MLS games and scored three goals for the first time since June 14 against the LA Galaxy. St. Louis will look to keep up its late-season momentum when the club travels to face Chicago Fire FC next Saturday (8:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).
