MLS Preseason 2020: Columbus Crew SC win 5-1 as trialist Derrick Etienne Jr. scores

Derrick Etienne Jr. – Haiti – goal celebration

Columbus Crew SC opened their preseason with a 5-1 victory over USL League Two side Ventura County Fusion in a match that revealed, among other things, that former New York Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati winger Derrick Etienne Jr. is on trial with the Crew.

Etienne was one of the goal scorers for Columbus, which is beginning its second season under coach Caleb Porter after Gregg Berhalter departed for the US national team managerial post in 2018.

Etienne, a New York Red Bulls academy product who played over three seasons with the RBNY first team, was rarely used in Cincinnati after the Ohio club picked him up on a half-season loan last summer. After the loan expired at season's end, Etienne returned to the Red Bulls but the club did not pick up his option for 2020.

The 23-year-old winger, who has also been capped for the Haiti national team, has six goals and four assists in 65 career league appearances (24 starts).

The other Crew goal scorers were Pedro Santos, JJ Williams and two 2020 MLS SuperDraft picks — Miguel Berry and Danny Griffin. While the Crew revealed their starting XI, other lineup details were not released.
