MLS Disciplinary Committee suspends, fines Chicago Fire defender Wells Thompson

Wells Thompson shields the ball

NEW YORK – The MLS Disciplinary Committee on Thursday suspended Chicago Fire defender Wells Thompson one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for a reckless challenge that endangered the safety of his opponent, Columbus Crew midfielder Agustín Viana in the 12th minute of their April 20 match.

Thompson was issued a yellow card on the play, and the Committee unanimously determined that additional sanction was warranted.

Thompson will serve his suspension this Saturday when the Fire travel to face the Montreal Impact.
