Minnesota United sign free agent midfielder Wil Trapp

Wil Trapp - Inter Miami - head up in midfield

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

Minnesota United have signed free agent midfielder Wil Trapp, the club announced Tuesday. He was out of contract following one season with Inter Miami.

Trapp, who turns 28 in a couple of weeks, spent 2020 with Miami and started 16 of the club's 23 games in their expansion season. He originally signed a homegrown contract with Columbus Crew SC and spent seven seasons with his boyhood club, including a period as club captain. He made 185 appearances in Ohio.

“We are obviously delighted to get a player of his age, quality, experience and a current US international,” head coach Adrian Heath said in a club statement. “Wil made it very clear from the outset that this was the only club he wanted to go to. Having spoken with him at length, I know he’s incredibly excited about our plans moving forward and which he’s excited to be a part of. Speaking to his former coaches and managers, the most frequently used words were quality, professional, leadership and honesty. These qualities completely dovetail into the type of person we are looking to bring into our club as we try to improve on what was a successful last season.”

The midfielder has 20 caps with the US national team.

“I am delighted to be joining a team and club with high ambitions,” Trapp said. “There is a great energy about this team and the Twin Cities’ support. I am very excited to get to work and help this club achieve its goals.”

Trapp joins a rising Minnesota United squad which made the Western Conference final in 2020, led by midseason acquisition Emanuel Reynoso. He'll likely compete for minutes at the base of midfield with the likes of Jan Gregus and Hassani Dotson
