Miguel Almiron wins second straight Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

Make it a double for Miguel Almiron.

The Atlanta United FC attacker was voted Alcatel MLS Player of the Week for Week 13 by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR), marking the second consecutive week he’s won the honor.

Almiron picked up the Week 13 award for his performance in Atlanta’s 3-1 win against New York City FC at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The 23-year-old attacker followed up his hat trick in Atlanta’s 4-1 win against Houston last week with a pair of goals on Sunday to power the expansion club to all three points against NYCFC.

Almiron scored Sunday’s first goal in the 16th minute, picking up a Julian Gressel cutback near the penalty spot, calmly taking a touch and firing past Sean Johnson to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead. After Hector Villalba doubled Atlanta’s advantage in the 19th, Almiron made it 3-0 in the 23rd, picking up another Gressel cutback and slotting home into an empty net.

The brace marked Almiron’s second straight multi-goal game and his third of the season. The Paraguayan international now has seven goals and four assists in 12 appearances this season. He and his Atlanta teammates will return to action on Saturday at Vancouver (5:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE in the US, TSN in Canada).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
