MetroStars 2, Crew 1 -- quote sheet

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER QUOTE SHEET

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 2005 - METROSTARS 2, COLUMBUS CREW 1
METROSTARS HEAD COACH BOB BRADLEY

On the first 20 minutes before the weather delay:
"We didn't play a good first 20 minutes. We didn't have any life. I think it was because of the way they play right now. They drop back, and with a man-to-man mark they try to make the game very slow. And it's fine to start at a slow pace and little by little get yourself into the game, but then you really kill yourself when they get a goal off of a second ball off a set piece again, which is similar to the Dallas game. We clear the ball originally, but then the ball gets played back in and you don't do a good job with that part. The first 20 minutes was not the way we wanted to play tonight. We didn't push the tempo, we played things slow, and that had to change."

On Youri Djorkaeff's play as of late:
"If you look closely, you will see that this is a real progression of late. Since we took him out of action (the third week of July) and said look, we need a plan where you are fitter and everything else. I thought he played pretty well against Dallas at home; he played very well against Dallas on the road. He didn't have quite as much against D.C. but that's a crazy game based upon the way the goals were scored and then tonight I thought was excellent."

METROSTARS FORWARD SERGIO GALVAN REY

On the effort:
"We have to give a little bit extra, each individual, and if we give that little bit that we were going to come away with a win."

On the importance of the game:
"It's important because this game was huge for us. The effort that we put in was big and fortunately we were able to get the three points and right now we have to start thinking not about the game we just won, but about the game next week."

METROSTARS GOALKEEPER TONY MEOLA

On the importance of the game:
"This game was a lot bigger because there are only 11 games left, especially with the amount of wins that we've had in the last 10 games. I think it's only been three or four, and for some reason it seems difficult for us to get points,, but I think we did what we had to do and now Chivas is next and hopefully we can do the same. Bob said at the beginning of the week, we had three home games in a row and the only way to keep this thing going is to get nine points. So thank God for the rain delay today because I don't know what the heck was going on in the first 20 minutes. But we came out with a lot more intensity and battled."

COLUMBUS CREW INTERIM HEAD COACH ROBERT WARZYCHA

On the game:
"We had to come out in the second half after the break and show them that we want to be aggressive and go after them and score more goals. Basically it showed that the break helped them out a lot. They came out believing that they were going to win the game and score a goal. It think from my point of view we stopped playing."

COLUMBUS CREW FORWARD JOHN WOLYNIEC

On the break and the game:
"Well it sucked because we had to wait 45 minutes. I think it was very obvious that they came out better than us and unfortunately we had them before the break and they got it afterwards and we held it up till half time. We didn't come out in the second half like we should have. We weren't sharp enough. You have to give them credit, they wanted it and they came out and got two goals after half time."

On what went on during the break:
"It's tough, you don't know how long it is going to be and you don't know whether to keep moving or relax and sit down, stretch and then get going again when you have to come out. You just have to keep your head in the game."
