US Soccer held the draw for the first-round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday, pairing 46 teams from American soccer’s lower divisions against each other for 23 matches on May 11.
US-based USL teams not owned or operated by an MLS club will enter the Open Cup in the second round, NASL teams will enter the competition in the third round and American MLS clubs will begin their tournament in the fourth round.
The first-round is contested by a mixture of local qualifiers, PDL clubs and NPSL clubs. The New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders all have Under-23 PDL teams in the first-round. Despite being operated by MLS clubs, the U-23 PDL sides are allowed to compete because they are amateur teams. That’s in contrast to the fully professional USL teams that are owned or operated by MLS clubs and are barred from the competition.
