Real Madrid 1, Lyon 1 (1-2 agg.)
Real Madrid took just five minutes to level the aggregate score at the Bernabéu, but Lyon remained stout and squeezed out a second-half goal to dump the nine-time European champions from this year's campaign on Wednesday afternoon.
Miralem Pjanic poked home the series-winning goal in the 75th minute, latching on to the ball as it bobbled up around the penalty spot. The goal tied the game at 1-1, but put Lyon ahead 2-1 on aggregate.
The French champions had not conceded a goal in more than 10 hours of soccer prior to Wednesday's match, but they conceded early to give Madrid the psychological edge.
Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo ran on to a long ball sent from the left before rifling a shot through the legs of Lyon 'keeper Hugo Lloris. It was Ronaldo's eighth goal of the competition and the first Lyon had conceded in six games.
But Lyon remained resolute and frustrated the hosts. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saved well from Gonzalo HiguaÃn, who then hit the post despite facing an empty net. Kaká showed clever touches, but his finishing wasn't to par.
Kaké was eventually subbed out for Madrid legend Raúl -- many times a Bernabéu hero -- but Pjanic's goal would prove the difference as Lyon held on for the famous win.
With the loss, Real Madrid missed the chance to become the first play to play a Champions League final at its home ground since Roma in 1984.
Manchester United 4, AC Milan 0 (7-2 agg.)
David Beckham may have been back in town, but Wayne Rooney is the Golden Boy around Old Trafford -- and beyond -- these days.
Rooney, who scored twice in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, was on target twice once again as the Red Devils defeated AC Milan and punched their ticket to the quarterfinals.
Carrying a sturdy 3-2 aggregate lead into the game, Manchester United didn't need much to push past the Italians -- but they were heavy-handed anyway. Rooney got things rolling in the 13th minute, nodding home his seventh consecutive headed goal to essentially end Milan's -- and Beckham's -- European campaign.
Rooney then doubled the score early in the second half after slotting home Nani's perfectly weighted pass from the left. Park Ji-Sung buried a low shot 13 minutes later, and Darren Fletcher headed in the fourth strike to finish the fixture off.
As for Beckham, he did enter the game in the 64th minute to a rousing applause. It was his first competitive appearance at Old Trafford since leaving Manchester United in 2003.
